Resolution of the Princeton Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Recommending Financial Aid Reform for Dining and Social Options Provided by Princeton's Eating Clubs
Whereas, this body recognizes that social options for all undergraduates and dining options for upperclassmen are uniquely limited in the Princeton context;
Whereas, this body believes that every student should be free to choose among all existing social and dining options available in the greater Princeton University community;
Whereas, we find it a basic principle of equality that choices among existing social and dining options at Princeton should not be principally motivated by financial concerns;
Whereas, by failing to account for the additional cost associated with most Eating Club dining options, the current financial aid system for undergraduates demonstrating need at Princeton University necessarily makes the choice between existing alternatives principally motivated by financial concerns;
Whereas, this body fears further social fragmentation of the Princeton undergraduate student body with the advent of the four-year college system if the current financial aid system is not reformed;
Whereas, this body is uniquely positioned to convey the opinions of students on this pressing matter to the appropriate Princeton University administrators;
The Following are Hereby Resolved,
1. The USG shall work with the Eating Clubs and Princeton University's Office of Financial Aid to design a system in which the cost of joining a club is counted as part of demonstrated need, and treated as any other part of a student's demonstrated need in determining the financial aid package given to a student.
2. The USG shall advocate that the revised method for calculating a student's demonstrated need apply to all clubs, regardless of each individual club's method of choosing its members.
3. The USG shall undertake every effort to make the revised program workable for as many dining options as possible.
4. Cognizant of the imperative to implement a revised system before the commencement of the four-year college system, the USG shall work with, and shall encourage all relevant parties to work with, all due haste to implement the revisions suggested herein.
