Fire breaks out in Gauss Hall

A small kitchen fire broke out tonight in 211 Gauss Hall. No students were injured and the fire was soon contained.

The room's walls had been soaked in alcohol, a firefighter and policeman on the scene said. Emergency workers, who received a call after an alarm was activated at 10:08 p.m., said that the fire started accidentally, possibly due to a cigarette.

"It is apparent that alcoholic beverage was ignited and that was the cause of the fire," University spokeswoman Cass Cliatt '96 said last night, adding that though no arrests were made, an investigation is pending.

"It's possible that this could be referred for disciplinary action," she said.

The 10 sophomore males who live in the room "no longer have a kitchen," Mike Westrol '07, an off-duty volunteer firefighter who happened to arrive on the scene, said.

Four hook-and-ladder trucks and one fire rescue vehicle were on the scene. Public Safety officers were also present.

The last dormitory fire occurred Dec. 16 outside Holder Hall.
