Trotman poised to become mayor

Borough Council is expected to select Councilwoman Mildred Trotman to serve as mayor this week, filling the vacancy left by the death of Joseph O'Neill on Oct. 21.

At a meeting Thursday, the Borough's Democratic Committee nominated three people for the mayor's office as required by election law, but recommended that the Council select Trotman.

The other two nominees, Borough Councilman David Goldfarb and District 1 Committeeman Mark Salzman '07, both voiced support for Trotman and said their selection was mainly a formality.

"Technically they could pick me, but I don't think it's going to happen," Salzman said. "I think Mildred would be great."

The Borough Council will convene Wednesday night, one day after the Borough election in which Trotman and Goldfarb are up for reelection to their Council seats.

If selected, Trotman will immediately take the oath as mayor and serve until the November 2006 election, when voters will choose someone to serve out the final year of O'Neill's term.

"I am quite excited and pleased with the support that I have gotten," Trotman said. "We may not agree how to get there, but we all want to do what is best for Princeton Borough. I'm looking forward to leading as best I can."

Democratic Committee Chairman Andrew Koontz praised Trotman's qualifications to serve, noting that she was the only candidate who expressed great interest in the position and has more than 20 years of experience on the Council.

"She's highly confident and highly capable with an enormous amount of experience," he added. "She will listen to all sides of the argument but make strong decisions ... I'm looking forward to serving with her."

Trotman will automatically become a candidate in the 2006 election if she decides to continue in her capacity as mayor but must compete in a primary if a Democratic challenger surfaces, Koontz said.
