Campaigning for USG elections officially begins today, with seven candidates vying for the student government presidency. Voting will begin Sunday and run through Tuesday, and runoffs will be held later next week.
The presidential candidates are: Undergraduate Life Chair Tom Brown '07, Freddy Flaxman '07, U-Councilor Jeremy Johnson '07, Senator Alex Lenahan '07, Will Scharf '08, Campus and Community Affairs Chair Carol Wang '07 and Senator Chris Willis '07.
Competing for vice president are U-Councilor Rob Biederman '08 and Senator Sunshine Yin '08. Another 10 offices are also up for grabs.
A total of 27 candidates are vying for the 12 spots — a slight decrease from the 32 that ran last year.
"In general, I am very pleased with the strong interest in running for elections," said USG vice president and senior elections manager Jesse Creed '07.
No one is currently running for the position of Class of 2007 senator, but the petition deadline for new candidates has been extended until shortly before the election.
Creed said USG officers would pay close attention to ensure that election rules are observed, especially in the presidential election.
"The more competitive the race, the more rule violations occur," Creed said.
In the campaign for freshman class president this fall, Casey Ford Alexander '09 was disqualified from the race for campaigning before the official start date and placing table tents in dining halls without permission.
Among the issues likely to spark debate in this year's presidential election are the pending four-year residential college system and the grade inflation policy implemented by Dean of the College Nancy Malkiel, which presidential contender Will Scharf '08 criticized as "arbitrary and artificial."
Matt Martin '08 and Caitlin Sullivan '07 are vying for academics chair, while Sarah Breslow '08, Jacob Candelaria '09 and Tamar Saunders '08 are competing for chair of campus and community affairs. Two positions are unopposed: David Smart '09 for treasurer and Caroline Chopko '07 for undergraduate life chair.
The race for Class of 2008 senator will include Rohan Joshi, Jimmy Nowicke and current Senator Andrea Pasinetti.

Freshmen Kelly Fenelon, James Lavelle, Ian Lord, Euphemia Mu, Ankur Patel, Tracy Vu, Josh Weinstein and Rob Weiss are running for Class of 2009 senator. Mu is also a staff writer for The Daily Princetonian.
The presidential debate will be held Wednesday evening.
