Mullen twins discuss life on the run

Daily Princetonian senior writer Tim Petrella recently sat down with junior twins Caroline and Catha Mullen of the women's cross country and track teams to discuss the facebook.com, freckles and fights. Needless to say, the answers were illuminating.

Daily Princetonian: The women's cross country team did really well at Nationals, which is awesome, but let's talk about a personal race that some people might not be aware of — the race for Facebook.com "Friends." Right now Caroline is down by nine with 437 to Catha's 446. How are you going to catch up, Caroline?

Caroline Mullen: Frankly, I don't think that Facebook.com Friends are a true measure of popularity. But that being said, I think the key to raising my numbers will probably be meeting more people in my precepts and classes.

Catha Mullen: Actually, I think that Caroline thought she could make more friends if she put up a sexy picture on the facebook.

Caroline: I'm confident I'll catch up.

DP: Do you have any special pre-race rituals? Any music you like to listen to?

Caroline: Mostly I prefer to keep things quiet. Usually, I don't even talk to anyone. I just try to get into a zone.

Catha: Pre-race songs? Definitely "Take Me Home" by Phil Collins.

Caroline: Oh yeah, and the remix by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.

DP: What's your most embarrassing running story?

Caroline: One time Catha and I were leading the pack on a poorly marked race course. Halfway through the race we ended up on the local interstate with the entire race behind us.

Catha: I'm not quite sure it was an interstate, but it was definitely still embarrassing.

DP: What's the better show with twins, Sister Sister or Full House?

Catha: When most people think of Full House they forget that there are actually two sets of twins in the show, the Olsen Twins and Uncle Jesse's kids. When you combine that with the quality of the show, it's an easy pick.

Caroline: I agree. Tia and Tamara were just annoying.

DP: Catha, what should everyone know about Caroline?

Catha: Everyone should know Caroline is very nice in her own way and ... she is great at finding things. If you lose anything, she can find it for you.

Caroline: That's right!

DP: Who would win in a fight?

Caroline: Catha, most likely.

Catha: She might be able to get a draw.

DP: How about a rap battle?

Catha: We actually had a rap-off against the seniors on our team when we were freshmen.

Caroline: And I helped to write all the lyrics for our team.

Catha: Let's just say we were all losers that day.

DP: Rough guess, how many times have you been called by the other's name since you've been at Princeton?

Catha: Literally, like a hundred thousand times.

Caroline: I'd say more like 50,000 times. Wait a sec ... five times a day for about 10,000 days [Pauses and then looks to Catha]. Probably less than that.

Catha: It happens a whole lot.

DP: What's the best thing for someone to do if they can't tell you apart?

Catha: Just get to know us a little! We are very friendly people.

Caroline: Catha also has a small freckle on her right cheek.

Catha: And Caroline is a little bit shorter and brushes her hair.

DP: What's going through your head at meter 4,500 of the 5k?

Catha: Hmm ... ice cream. I bet Caroline thinks about her boyfriend though.

Caroline: I am usually blacked out by then.

DP: What's more awkward to use today, gnarly or bodacious?

Caroline: Gnarly.

Catha: Bodacious. I don't think I've ever used either, but I'd be more inclined to use gnarly.

DP: Best date restaurant in Princeton?

Catha: Blue Point Grill. It's not too expensive for someone with a tight budget.

Caroline: Teresa's. The whole Italian ambiance definitely does it for me.

Catha: I would also recommend Winberie's. Two milk shakes, one straw.

Caroline: You mean, two straws, one...

Catha: No.

DP: Creepiest thing you've seen on the Tow Path?

Caroline: One time, I saw a goose hybrid. You know, like a farm goose crossed with a Canadian goose.

DP: How could you tell it was a hybrid?

Caroline: Well it looked really strange, and it was being ostracized by the other geese.

Catha: I always see a lot trash. People should be more careful with their refuse.
