Ever since the football team defeated Harvard three weeks ago, Princetonians have entertained visions of something no current undergraduate at the University has seen: Cannon Green ablaze in the glow of a bonfire, the traditional celebration for gridiron victories over Harvard and Yale. But, with preparations for this revelry already underway, it is important to remember that we're only halfway there; we still need a victory over Yale for our celebratory conflagration to occur.
So help the football team do its part by making sure you do yours. Go to the game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
There will surely be a contingent of fans from Yale at the game, hoping to help their Elis destroy our dreams of a triumphant inferno on Cannon Green. As proud Princeton students, we simply cannot let this happen; Princeton Stadium, after all, is our house. The student body should pack the bleachers and give the football team a true home-field advantage as it attempts to secure the first bonfire in a decade.
Saturday's game, of course, is about more than lighting Cannon Green on fire. In recent years, many students have displayed an unfortunate ambivalence toward our football team, complaining about its struggles rather than supporting its efforts. This year, however, the football team has a legitimate shot at its first Ivy League title since 1995. Moreover, Saturday will be the last home game for the team's seniors, who have been instrumental in building the program up from an also-ran to a championship contender.
The Tigers, especially the seniors, deserve the full support of the student body. We look forward to seeing students come to the stadium on Saturday afternoon decked out in the Orange and Black and prepared to noisily support our squad. Let's make Princeton Stadium reverberate like it never has before and help our football team send the Bulldogs back to New Haven with their tails between their legs.
