Crosswalk safety needs atttention

Regarding 'Two students struck by vehicles' (Thursday, Nov. 17):

In response to the students hit by vehicles yesterday, the University clearly needs to improve conditions at crosswalks. In particular, the "sophisticated pedestrian safety system" used for the crosswalk between Fine and Lewis Thomas is woefully inadequate. The lights are hard to see when driving, and remain blinking while pedestrians are no longer in the crosswalk, creating confusion for both drivers and pedestrians. Rather than wasting money on warning systems or bridges, a simple solution would be to improve the lighting on the sidewalks and streets so that drivers can actually see pedestrians. Hopefully the University will take immediate action to avoid any future incidents.
