Running the gauntlet

As Reagan-era children are wont to do, your humble weatherman often reminisces about the rich smorgasbord of television programming offered during the medium's Second Golden Age (1991-94). Specifically, when I wasn't watching the Weather Channel's Tropical Update at :50 past the hour, I was fond of tuning into USA Network's afternoon lineup, because sandwiched between "The $100,000 Pyramid" and Saget-era "American's Funniest Home Videos" was the cultural touchstone that is "American Gladiators."

Ah, the point emerges. This weekend's forecast reminds me of the dreaded Eliminator, though instead of being bombarded by Spandex-clad men and masculine women with names like Ice, Nitro and, briefly during the seldom-seen fourth season, Spaz, this weekend's weather will be a blistering sensory assault of cold, winds and rain.

A mid-level disturbance will bring heavy precipitation on Saturday and lighter rain tomorrow and Sunday. Overcast conditions mean temperatures will vainly struggle to reach the upper 50s, much as suburban orthodontists unsuccessfully challenged Turbo in the Joust.

Longterm, the threat of wind and rain continues with Hurricane Wilma possibly moving offshore parallel to the coast. While this would be a significant event for Monday/Tuesday, it is unclear if this scenario will play out. So, for the time being, I am holding at Defcon 2, but preparations to rapidly fuel the Prince's nuclear arsenal are in place if the threat crystallizes further.
