Police question Frist assault suspect

A suspect in the attempted assault in a Frist Campus Center bathroom two weeks ago was apprehended and questioned Wednesday by law enforcement authorities. The attempted assault took place Oct. 2 in a women's bathroom on the 100-level of Frist.

"An individual is being questioned [by Public Safety and Borough police officials]," Public Safety director Steven Healy said Wednesday night. "But I have not heard anything beyond that."

He said the case is "still kind of up in the air" since questioning has not been completed. "In police investigations, as you question a suspect the case often unfolds," he added.

Healy did not comment further on the suspect's identity or how he was found. It remains unclear which law enforcement agency apprehended the suspect.

Some of the individuals who witnessed the assault and were interviewed by Borough police during the investigation were notified Wednesday that a man had been taken into custody for questioning.

According to the police report of the Oct. 2 incident, the assailant crawled under the door of the bathroom's handicapped stall and attempted to assault the victim, an undergraduate student. The man fled after "groping [the victim] and attempting to place his hand down her pants," the report said.

University spokesperson Cass Cliatt '96 said Wednesday night that the administration had not received official information from Public Safety or Borough police about the apprehension of a suspect.

"They have not notified us of any developments today," she said.
