Halpern and Parros in NHL
Last night, Jeff Halpern '99 and George Parros '03 suited up for the National Hockey League's opening night. After a stint in Europe during last season's lockout, Halpern returned to his former team, the Washington Capitals, for his sixth season with the new designation of team captain. The Capitals opened up the season at home against Columbus. Parros made his league debut as a member of the Los Angeles Kings at Dallas.
Halpern, who starred for Princeton from 1995-99, led the Tigers to an ECAC title in 1998 and played in the program's only game in the NCAA tournament the same year.
Parros, the seventh Tiger to wear an NHL jersey, was drafted by the Kings prior to his freshman year and has been in the Kings' system since graduating in 2003. Most recently, Parros played two seasons for Manchester in the American Hockey League.
Matheson honored by Ivy
Women's soccer star sophomore midfielder Diana Matheson was named Ivy League co-Player of the Week on Monday after helping her team to two wins last week. In a 4-0 win over Lasalle, Matheson's 72nd-minute goal broke the scoreless tie. She also provided the game-winner at Dartmouth in the first half before assisting on a goal later in the game to secure Princeton's 2-0 victory.
With those five points, Matheson, who has 11 points on the season, has moved to within three points of senior Emily Behncke for the team points lead. Matheson is the first Tiger player to receive an Ivy League honor this season.
