Ivy, TI go dry amid investigation

Ivy Club and Tiger Inn have closed their doors to guests this weekend amid a Borough Police investigation into charges of underage drinking on the Street.

A 17-year-old student visiting the University from The Lawrenceville School was detained by police officers on the morning of Oct. 9 after appearing intoxicated inside the WaWa convenience store, Borough Police Lt. Dennis McManimon said Thursday.

The student, who was accompanied by a University student, was spotted by a Public Safety officer entering the store.

Officers determined the individual had been drinking at two of the eating clubs on Prospect Avenue, McManimon said, declining to specify which. A police investigation into the two clubs is underway.

No charges were filed against the student, who was released once his mother reached the WaWa, McManimon said.

McManimon said he believed the student was a prospective applicant, but declined to say whether he was being recruited by a sports team.

"Our prosecutor and a detective met with [the clubs' officers] to discuss this whole incident and remind them of their rights," he said. "Clearly this is a situation where some of the processes the clubs have in place to make sure a situation like this doesn't happen — they obviously weren't working properly that night."

In an email to Cottage club members Wednesday, Cottage president Conor Stransky '06 referenced the Oct. 9 incident and urged members to follow the group's guest and wristband policies strictly.

"Both TI and Ivy are now dealing with the legal ramifications of the incident," Stransky said. "This is unfortunate for those two clubs, and while it does not affect us from a legal standpoint, it has heightened the awareness of local officials."

TI president Tim Prugar '06 declined to comment, and Ivy president Clancey Hilkene '06 did not respond to an email yesterday requesting comment.

"As TI and Ivy found out, our situation is very fragile," Stransky said in his email, "and if we want to continue enjoying all the benefits we have it is necessary that we follow [club] policies strictly."
