Course guide to be redesigned

Though the USG hoped to deliver a newly revamped Student Course Guide this fall — after hiring two students for the project — most of the intended updates will not be completed until December, as the group looks for new designers for the task.

The changes, funded by the USG, will bring the website's code up-to-date and make the SCG, an online resource that offers student-written reviews of course offerings, more user-friendly. After previously hiring two students for the project, the USG is now looking for a new web designer to go forward with the project.

Last spring, the SCG was limited to a course scheduler and a small number of course reviews. Seeking to improve the SCG's functionality, the USG interviewed several candidates at the end of last year to redesign the site and selected two based on the prototype site they presented.

Robert Wai Wong '06, USG Academics Chair, declined to name the students chosen.

The new site had a deadline at the beginning of September. Toward the end of the summer, however, some preliminary deadlines were missed.

This fall, the USG has decided to choose a new designer though "nothing's been finalized on who the new web designer will be," USG President Leslie Bernard-Joseph '06 said in an email.

Hopes are high that the new site will be up and running in time for course selection in December and the USG plans to devote "as much of our resources as necessary" and "tweak this until we get it right," Wong said.

The USG plans to add new features including a scheduler with increased versatility, allowing students to add extracurricular activities — like soccer practice — to their schedule.

Wong also said the USG hopes the new site will allow students to review individual professors. These reviews will be linked to the guide for the individual courses the professor teaches.
