Cafe engineered for E-Quad

Students working in the E-Quad will no longer need to walk as far as Frist to refuel. As part of a renovation plan to improve the E-Quad, a new cafe has opened in the northern lobby.

The cafe will not accept meal points, but students will be able to charge purchases to their University accounts.

Students and other visitors will be able to choose from a variety of breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, soups, desserts, coffee and other beverages.

"Given the E-Quad's distance from the rest of campus, putting a cafe there makes sense," electrical engineering student Safiyy Momen '07 said.

Some students are concerned about the new cafe's operating hours, which are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the school year. "It's a shame that the cafe closes before many students leave the E-Quad," Momen said.

Rene Skaaning, manager of the E-Quad Cafe, said that the hours of operation are based on the experiences of other cafes around campus, mentioning that business usually dies down by late afternoon.

He added that the existing hours are not permanent and will ultimately be influenced by the volume of business.

"Next week when students arrive here, if there is a big boom in breakfast and evening hours, I'm sure [Dean Klawe] will have no problem extending the hours," Skaaning said.

The cafe, which is managed by Restaurant Associates and University Services, will also offer catering services.

A grand opening celebration will be held next week.
