After two-year search, Roth takes helm at CJL

After a two-year search, the Center for Jewish Life has appointed Rabbi Julie Roth its new executive director. Prior to assuming her position on July 15, Roth studied for six years at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.

Before her rabbinical studies, Roth was program director of Hillel at Tufts University and spent time with Hillel International working with Hillels in the former Soviet Union and Germany to "cultivate Jewish student leadership worldwide."

"I was inspired to work with Hillel in college," Roth said, adding that she "like[s] the pluralism of Hillel." She noted that all forms of Judaism pray together at the CJL and that she hopes to attract the entire community to the Center.

"Our central mission is to meet the religious needs of Jewish students, but if we only focused on that, we would not effectively reach a large party of the Jewish community," Roth said. "It saddens me that students feel like they can't come in because they don't feel Jewish enough."

Some of her plans include establishing a Jewish theater program, expanding social justice initiatives — including aid for the regions hurt by Hurricane Katrina — and talking to upperclassmen to see how the Center might work with eating clubs.

Though Roth characterized the University's past relationship with the Jewish community as not "glorious," she said that Princeton is now "a leader among universities in supporting [Jewish] campus life."
