A fire caused minor damage on the east side of the Holder construction site near Nassau Presbyterian Church on Tuesday night. There were no "major consequences" or injuries, and investigators have ruled out foul play, University spokesman Eric Quinones said.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire, which began around 8:15 p.m., within the dumpster in which it is believed to have started and four windows directly above it. All officials had left the scene by 10:30 p.m.
The cause of the fire was probably related to the renovations in progress at the 90 year-old dormitory building, Borough Fire Marshall Chip Sugg said.
After interviewing construction workers Wednesday morning, fire officials concluded the fire's causes to be "undetermined" and closed the investigation. But, Sugg added, "we will reopen [the investigation] if there's a need."
The noncombustible steel dumpster suffered "just superficial paint damage," Sugg said, but the fire-damaged windows will need to be replaced.
Fire officials recommended moving the dumpster further away from the building and by Wednesday afternoon it was again being used by construction workers.
Construction on the dorm, scheduled to reopen in September, will not be delayed because of the fire.
