Students studying into the wee hours for final exams will have a bit of consolation this spring.
Morning exams will be pushed back from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., allowing an additional half hour for sleep before the big test.
Registrar Joseph Greenberg said that, for as long as he can remember, University final exams have been scheduled in three time slots: 8:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Exam times were separated as much as possible to accommodate students in past years who were required to take multiple exams in one day.
Because students are now allowed to reschedule exams planned for the same day, there is no longer a need for wide gaps between exam times, Greenberg said.
Greenberg decided it would be "sensible" to move morning exams back half an hour to allow students and faculty some extra time before exams. He said the decision was "not in response to anyone's feedback."
"Given a choice between 9 and 8:30, people will choose 9," Greenberg said.
However, not all students agree.
"[There's] a real downside for morning people who see early exam times as a chance to outperform those who sleep in," said a student who preferred to remain anonymous.
But most students shared the opinion predicted by Greenberg.
"I think it's a good idea because it allows us a half hour more to prepare for exams; it allows us to get more material in before bed, which should in turn improve test scores," Jonathan Galeano '08 said.
"The fact that there'll be more sunlight will also help students get up in the morning and be more awake for the exam," Galeano added.

Greenberg said the change will be permanent unless his office identifies any problems with the new schedule.
