Regarding 'Fighting apathy, inspiring service' (Tuesday, March. 1, 2005):
I would like to thank you for taking an interest in PSU Dance Marathon. As a dancer this past year, and someone who has been involved with THON since being a freshman, it is encouraging to know the word continues to spread.
However, after reading your article last night online, I felt as if you sell your campus short. Penn State will always be seen as a "drinking school with a football problem," but for five weekends out of the year, the campus nearly shuts down and goes around the east coast to raise money for children battling cancer. If our campus can balance having a good time with school and philanthropy, why not all schools?
There are plenty of worthy causes out there, other than the Four Diamonds Fund which benefits Hershey Medical Center, (tsunami aid and AIDS research to name just two). I would encourage the students at your school to try and create a tradition like we have here at Penn State.
Never have I experienced giving so little of myself and receiving so much more in return. My only hope is that all students could have this same experience "For The Kids." Matthew Hess Senior, Penn State University
