Federico promoted by Borough Council to head police force

Early last month, the Princeton Borough Council appointed former Captain Anthony Federico as the new Chief of Police. Federico replaces longtime friend Charles Davall, who was hired as Public Safety's new Deputy Director of Operations in January.

"The [Borough] Council met and decided that I was the logical choice for promotion," Federico said.

Frederico and Davall have consistently worked together since joining the Borough Police together in 1980.

"Whenever they would take pictures of the Department, we would always be the bookends on the side," Davall said.

Davall and Frederico rose through the ranks together, attaining the ranks of Lieutenant and Captain within weeks of each other, he added.

Though they now lead different departments, Davall and Frederico will maintain a close relationship, especially in light of proposed changes to Public Safety's jurisdiction.

Federico said he approves of Davall's plan to make Public Safety a more autonomous department, with greater freedom in the handling of University affairs.

"I think that giving Public Safety more options would be better for them and [the Borough Police Department]," Federico said.

Federico stated that cooperation between the University and the Borough Police will remain strong.

"I think we've always had a good working relationship with the University," Federico said. "We don't have any plans to change the way in which we work with them."

Davall agreed that the close relationship between the Borough Police and Public Safety is a high priority, and said he felt that it could only get better with Federico as Chief.

"[Federico] is ethical, has great integrity, and has all the right tools to get the job done," Davall said. "I've known him very well for many years now, and this is an incredible opportunity for both the Borough Police and the University."
