Students appointed to political group

Jenna Gelfand '07 and Mark Salzman '07 were officially confirmed last weekend as representatives of the Princeton Community Democratic Organization (PCDO), a local political group.

Gelfand and Salzman will represent District 1, which encompasses a large portion of campus.

Princeton students have historically represented this district on the PCDO committee.

"Our main objective is getting local officials elected from the Democratic party," said Salzman, who called PCDO the "principal Democratic organization in the area" besides the College Democrats.

The sophomores will serve as official election officers in the district during local and national elections.

Other community representatives will join the two students in their partisan efforts.

Frances Schendle '06, president of the College Democrats, recommended Gelfand and Salzman to the PCDO. According to Schendle, they were selected in part because of their "commitment to liberal activities on campus" and an ability to "communicate excitement to the community."

Both Salzman and Schendle stressed a desire to get students more involved in local politics, particularly by supporting Democratic candidates in the area.

Schendle hopes to help accomplish this by maintaining a "close relationship" between the College Democrats and the PCDO.

Many PCDO representatives will attend the Mercer County Democratic Convention this coming weekend to discuss which candidates will receive nominations for certain offices.

Gelfand and Salzman will not attend as members of the PCDO because they have not been members for the requisite 30 days prior to the convention.

Evan Baehr '05 and Elissa DeVos '07 serve as elected District 1 representatives on the Princeton Borough Republican Committee, the Republican equivalent to the PCDO. Baehr has served as a representative on the Committee for three consecutive years.
