Last Minute Lovin'

Don't panic now, but you have less than a week. On Monday, your worth as a love interest will be determined entirely by what you bring to your significant — or not yet very significant — other. As a girl, I must admit that gifts I've received over the years for Valentine's Days have ranged from the unexpected to the outright creepy. I'm sure many of us long for the days when a "Choo Choo, I love you" card from the super-cute 10-year-old at the desk next to us could make us blush — even if his mom made him send one to everybody in the class. But don't give up altogether and resign yourself to another Valentine's Day of gently weeping through Meg Ryan movies and gorging on Valentine conversation hearts. You're lucky enough to live in Princeton, where the finest shops this side of Nassau Street beckon with gifts for any size pocket or desire.

J. Crew, as usual, is replete with cashmere sweaters for girls. For men, red polo shirts for $34 are also a good idea.

Ralph Lauren has cable knit sweaters for the more serious gift givers: the cotton version is $98, the cashmere $398.

Hamilton Jewelers recommends a David Yurman heart bracelet or diamond stud earrings (about $260). For the tighter wallet, they offer jewelry boxes and heart-shaped paper weights in their gift room.

Who needs nice, when you can be naughty?

Rouge is your best bet in town with a monopoly on the lingerie market. Dolce and Gabana lingerie runs from $100 to a very fashionable $300. A less expensive option: silk boy-cut shorts by Mary Green for $25.

J. Crew is sporting its sexier side with Valentine's Day-themed boxers for $16.

The Flower Market is offering tulip and rose bouquets. For an elegant twist on this classic gift, Flower Market is selling the bouquets in vases starting at $35.

If she says she only needs a card, check out the Papery of Princeton: handmade Valentine's Day cards run from $2 to $10 and they also carry a full line of stationary. The Papery also carries picture frames starting at a very reasonable $15. If you already have found a great gift somewhere else, drop by for Valentine's Day themed wrapping paper.

The Cork Screw Wineshop recommends a 2002 Guillam Pinot Noir for $13. This month's special is a mixed case containing six red wines and six whites for a total of $120.
