Corzine pledges to restore trust in N.J. government

Senator Jon Corzine spoke to raise support for his gubernatorial campaign Sunday at an event sponsored by the Princeton Community Democratic Organization.

About 100 community members and roughly 10 University students attended the event — held at the Suzanne Patterson Senior Center — to meet Democratic candidates before the June primary.

Candidates for the New Jersey assembly and Mercer County freeholder, clerk, and sheriff positions also attended.

Corzine, the keynote speaker at the event, explained his reasons for running for governor and outlined his proposals to a supportive crowd.

"When I was thinking about whether or not to run, I was thinking about how you could touch people's lives most closely, make the most difference," he said. "And, for the life of me, I cannot think of a better way than being the governor of New Jersey."

Other leading candidates for the Nov. 7 gubernatorial election include Republicans BretSchundler, Doug Forrester and John Murphy.

Corzine was elected to the Senate in 2000 after a career as chairman and chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs.

Corzine spoke of his intense passion for the upcoming election.

"I have fire in my belly about how this is going to make a change and difference for eight and a half million New Jerseyans," he said.

Corzine outlined his agenda, including plans to cap rising property taxes, improve the highway system, end racial profiling and help address the problems with social security.

He alluded to his personal wealth and past management experience at Goldman Sachs to increase his appeal.

Fesponding to a question about recent scandals involving Governor James McGreevey, Corzine said he would bring dignity back to politics in the State of New Jersey.

"Ethics in government are a threshold," he said. "You've got to talk straight with people."

College Democrats president Frances Schendle '06 attended the event with about eight other members of the College Democrats.

"I've heard [Corzine] speak before. He's very engaging," she said. "It will be great for the students and everyone to hear what he plans for his campaign."
