Tower Club kitchen vandalized, tree stolen

Vandals struck Tower Club early Thursday morning, triggering the kitchen's fire suppressant system and causing the club to shut down its kitchen for the day.

Tower president Eric Czervionke '05 said the club had no leads on the identities of the vandals. The kitchen was hit between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., when the vandals pulled the fire alarm and made off with Tower's Christmas tree, Czervionke said.

Canisters in the ceiling full of fire-suppressing powder spilled all over the kitchen, including over the grill.

"We've had to throw out all of the contaminated food and replace all of the powder in the suppression system," Czervionke said. "It has become a bit of a hassle for us."

The club fed its members Thursday by ordering pizza for lunch and hosting a barbeque for dinner in lieu of the food that would have been prepared in the club's still-contaminated kitchen.

"They did between $600 to $1,000 worth of damage, but what I was really peeved about was the Christmas tree," Czervionke said. "That just added insult to injury."

The Christmas tree, however, was found inside Cottage Club Thursday afternoon.

"I received a tip off from the president of Cottage, and went to claim our tree," Czervionke said.

The vandalism will not stop the club from hosting formals this Saturday.

"This won't affect the winter formals in any way. They'll be good to go," Czervionke said. "Vandalism happens all the time on the Street; it's not a big deal."

But not all Tower members dismissed the late-night antics.

"I think it was really disrespectful for somebody to do that," Adam Boorstin '06 said. "Destruction for destruction's sake doesn't make any sense."
