Letter misses the point of Robertson lawsuit

Regarding ''Robertson lawsuit is a waste of everybody's time' (Letter, Nov. 29):

Besides its vicious, self-defeating hyperbole and indescribable smugness, the letter betrays a complete lack of understanding of the facts relating to the Robertson lawsuit.

The Robertsons' gift specifically funds graduate studies at the Wilson School.ºFor this reason, the writercan't point to the distinguished careers of undergraduate alumni of the Wilson School as evidence that graduate alumni have gone on to careers in government. It is people like the letter's writer, those who play and fast and loose with texts that bear specific meanings, who are the cause of the present troubles between Princeton and the Robertson family. Has the writer done his research and looked at the language of the Roberton gift? If so, has he willfully ignored his findings?

And which of these two possibilites is worse? Jonathan Fluger '08

Transgender article overlooks gay plight

The article detailing the plight of "transgender" college students ('Lost in a world of man and woman,' Dec. 1) opened touchingly, describing one student's dissatisfaction with having to choose between the men's and women's locker rooms at Dillon — her difficulty being that she "is a biological woman who identifies as a man."

I sympathize, as I have often felt similarly. Despite biological realities, I think of myself as devastatingly attractive. I have therefore felt the pangs of confusion and fought my own struggle for identity after, for example, having beer poured on me after an ill-conceived pass at a late-night hottie on the Street.

The 'Prince' does a great disservice by running this kind of article because it trivializes the legitimate struggle for equality that gays and lesbians face. Lumping transgender, a term presumably used to refer to people who, to quote our nameless he/she, just "don't like being called 'girl'" lends credence to those who would claim that homosexuality is a perverse "lifestyle choice" — a debauch that can be cured by a good Bible-thrashing or electric shock. I have many gay friends, and it's clear to me as I think it's fairly clear to a majority of people that homosexuality is not a choice, but an inherent characteristic of someone's neurological makeup.

This is not the case here. To say that just because someone wishes she were a man she is deserving of exclusive gender-neutral housing and bathrooms is akin to saying that because I want to be rich but am currently poor I should be granted Mediterra at Hoagie Haven rates. Does that make me "trans-income"?

We should avoid trying merely to be fashionable and direct our attention where it is actually needed: furthering the cause of true homosexual equality. We don't need the trite baggage of transgender. Bryan Cattle '07
