Sophomores Ebersole, Huang remembered

Several sophomores took a break from their studies on Wednesday to honor the memories of Melissa Huang '07 and Alan Ebersole '07.

The officers of the Class of 2007 handed out small orange and black lapel ribbons, much like the well-known cancer awareness ribbons, in Frist Campus Center from 1 to 4 p.m.

"We wanted people to look up from their studies and realize that there is more going on in the world," Class of 2007 President James Williamson said.

The tragic deaths of Huang in early September and Ebersole over Fall Break left many students shocked. But some students said they had little time to mourn becuase of the University's fast-paced environment.

"Here at Princeton things move so fast," Class of 2007 Social Chair Jennifer Mickel said. "I felt as though I had no choice but to move on and not enough time for mourning of my own."

The class officers decided to create individual ribbons to allow students to have a personal role in mourning of their classmates.

"We were just trying to help people realize that there are more important things in life than the next midterm," Williamson added.

Associate Dean of Undergraduate Students Thomas Dunne was instrumental in acquiring the ribbons and reserving a table at Frist on such short notice, Williamson said.

"We really couldn't have organized it without his help," he said.

The officers were very pleased with how the student body responded to the ribbons.

"Lots of people wanted to make donations, but we weren't taking any so we had to refer them to the memorial funds." Mickel said.

The table won't be set up Thursday, Williamson said, but the officers plan on distributing ribbons from the USG office in Frist 204.
