Regarding 'NCAA president discusses fiscal responsibility' (Nov. 2):
The story concerning Myles Brand's speech that was given on Monday evening hit upon many good points but missed what I believe is the most important point of his visit here at Princeton.
Dr. Brand consciously selected Princeton to give his inaugural speech "Achieving Fiscal Responsibility" at NCAA member institutions precisely because he believes the funding model in existence at Princeton and in the Ivy League is the model that ought to be emulated by all Division I institutions. Princeton funds the essential athletic department activities through the use of general funds, in much the same way that every academic department on campus is funded. In doing so, Princeton recognizes the role that athletics plays in serving the educational mission of the University while at the same time contributing to the holistic education of our student-athletes.
By comparison, most major athletic programs beyond the Ivy League separately fund their "enterprise" off the university's balance sheet as autonomous, self-supporting and stand alone entities. Consequently, in that "big time" model, the ties to the educational mission of the university are vitiated and the search for additional revenues to offset escalating costs becomes a never ending vicious cycle.
The Department of Athletics at Princeton is indeed honored that Dr. Brand chose Princeton to send his very important message. Gary Walters '67 Director of Athletics
Ebersole '07 was a joy to have as a Spanish student
Regarding 'Swimmer Ebersole '07 dies in Fla.' (Nov. 1):
I received the news here in paradise and suddenly the ocean seems like a monster to me. The rainbow in the sky seems out of place on this dark day.
I am that "one on one Spanish teacher" who had the privilege of having Alan as a student. One of the happiest days of my life I owe to him. It was a great honor being named "Star Teacher" by my dream student. What a gentleman!
