Ivies discuss common concerns at bi-annual conference

Six student delegates represented the University at the Ivy Council fall conference this weekend, examining a range of joint issues from mail to online music sharing.

During the three-day conference in Ithaca, N.Y., students from every Ivy League school met to discuss matters of joint concern.

Princeton's delegation used the conference as an opportunity to learn how other schools deal with specific issues, such as mail services and summer storage, said head Ivy Council delegate Jay Saxon '05. Delegates will report their findings at the USG meeting Sunday night.

The USG can then use this information, Saxon said, to approach the administration.

Saxon used mail services as an example: "Every other [Ivy League] school has a centralized system, where you get your mail in one place for all four years. We can use this information [from the conference] and tell them, 'Our system is inefficient. Every other Ivy League school does it this way.' "

Delegates also discussed broader issues, such as legal music downloading on campuses and a possible lobby of the National Tuition Endowment.

"Ivy Council chapters are conducting research on the feasibility of and student interest in the program, which would reform the federal financial aid system and redirect the interest from student loans for students in need," said a council statement after the conference.

Over 100 students met to discuss topics ranging from student civic engagement to health services.

The Ivy Council conferences allow students from the each of the eight Ivy League schools to learn from the programs and services of the other schools.

Delegates can then use this information to implement changes in their own student governments.

"I think everybody left Cornell with a full agenda to better their schools and make more informed decisions," said Michelle Fernandes, Cornell head delegate and conference organizer, in the council statement.

Saxon appointed all of the Princeton delegates. The University was represented by only six students due to "last minute illnesses and emergencies," Saxon said.

The Ivy Council holds two conferences each year. The spring conference will be held at Dartmouth College.

The council also sponsors an annual Ivy Leadership Summit. This year, Princeton will host the event in February.
