Holt successfully defends House seat

"We believe that this race was about Congressman Holt's record but also his accessible, responsible representation of the people," Penna said. "It's about helping any campaign manager Paul Penna said."With any problem with the government and making sure the values of central New Jersey are represented in Congress."

Despite the results, Spadea's campaign manager Chris Carlozzi said his candidate ran a good campaign.

"We're very positive. We may have lost right now but we gave it a good go," he said.

"It was a challenging race in a district with a six-year incumbent. We knew we had an uphill battle," Carlozzi added.

Both Holt and Spadea led active campaigns, trying to reach as many constituents as they could in the weeks leading up to the election. Holt often campaigned in three of the district's five counties each day. Spadea walked through the district, covering over 200 miles and visiting 44 towns over the course of 22 days.

According to both candidates, education, homeland security, local job creation and health care reform constituted the pivotal issues of the race.

During his previous three congressional terms, Holt has served on the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Holt's campaign members cited his eagerness to return to office.

"The congressman believes that elections aren't the end of the process but the beginning of the process," Penna said. "His expectation is to back to work for the people of the Congress and to continue to represent them."

His plans for this term include support of an extension of the assault weapons ban, embryonic stem-cell research and a woman's right to have an abortion. He will oppose privatization of Social Security and any preemptive military policy.
