Burst pipe floods rooms in Forbes

A pipe in the Forbes Main Inn burst Friday at 10:30 p.m., flooding the building's second floor with hot water.

A brass-plated fitting broke in a pipe causing water to drip through the ceiling.

The flood most severely damaged two rooms on the second floor, but the dripping water dampened the carpet of two rooms on the first floor as well.

"The water came through the closet and also the bathroom . . . There were a couple of inches of water," said Teresa Velez '07, whose second floor room was most affected. "Luckily it was clean water and not sewage," Velez said.

Velez and her roommate Laura Wieschaus '07 will be moved to emergency housing. On Sunday, the girls were in their RA's room awaiting a move to Dod. They said they were not happy about temporarily moving to an upperclass dorm.

"We had to take things off the walls . . . Books got wet. The water was coming out of my closet, so my clothes were drenched," Wieschaus said. "People were literally bucketing water out of our room."

The flood lasted until 12:30 a.m., and may affect the open mic nights planned to begin in December in the Forbes Black Box Theater.

"The water dripped down into the Black Box and affected the lighting booth," Wieschaus said. "So I don't know if events are going to happen soon."

Public Safety Lt. Gary Nuttall said the problem was not preventable. "It's just the wear and tear of an old pipe," he said.
