Whitman proceeds on schedule

Students may have begun to wonder about the status of Whitman College as piles of dirt rise above the construction site. Despite several obstacles, work is proceeding on schedule.

Workers have been challenged with an "aggressive schedule," said John Ziegler, the project's director.

Construction was recently completed on the foundations for the northern sections of the building. Workers are currently pouring cement foundations on the third and fourth of the building's eight sections.

Obstacles have, however, contributed to work site difficulties, Ziegler said. Rocks needed to be removed from the ground, though he said the issue was "not a surprise."

Ziegler added that the tight construction area has turned out to be "the biggest physical challenge."

Despite these difficulties, the project is "holding steady" on budget, he said.

The building has not yet taken shape, and Ziegler said foundation work will continue through the winter.

The project is still slated for completion by early 2007, which will allow students to move in by fall of that year.

The completion date is several months before the planned move-in to give the University time to test the facilities.

That time will also be used to furnish the dorms and conduct mechanical and communications tests.

Once testing is completed and college staff are properly trained, students will be able to move in.
