There's nothing wrong with fall rush

Regarding 'Postpone rush' (Sept. 21):

Rarely have I encountered a debate as mind-boggling as the current one over Greek life. Were I an outsider with no knowledge of campus life, both the University's attitude and the 'Prince's coverage would lead me to believe that freshmen students were being abducted and forced into fraternity conscription.

Nothing at Princeton is more of a choice than joining a Greek organization. Frosh have the ability to join, not join, or even to join and de-pledge if they later decide a fraternity isn't right. At the same time, having rush in the fall allows sophomores — who have a full year of school under their belts — an unbiased chance to rush, an important opportunity that exists at few other schools.

Like dance groups and signing organizations, fraternities and sororities do not hurt anyone and greatly enrich the experiences and enjoyment of their members. If those groups, which take up far more time than fraternities, can recruit as soon as school starts, let the Greeks do the same.

The University needs to stop wasting time and money on obscenely inappropriate letters to parents and focus on far more pressing issues, like why the sink in my bathroom is constantly clogged. Matt Musa '05
