Pre-frosh visits increase by 50 percent

"Without a doubt," "decidedly so," "outlook good" — the '8-ball' posters, tacked up around campus to attract student hosts, echo what the admissions office hopes to hear from admitted students after this year's pre-frosh weekend.

The admission office has stepped up efforts to recruit volunteer hosts, as the number of pre-frosh scheduled to stay on campus this weekend represents an almost 50 percent increase compared to previous years.

According to Dean of Admission Janet Rapelye, most years draw 180 to 250 visiting pre-frosh. This year, the office expects more than 370 visiting students, not including walk-ins that did not respond to the invitation.

"This week we really stopped, took a pause, and said, 'Wow,'" Rapelye said.

Rapelye said the "8-ball" campaign was designed before the office knew it would need more hosts than in past years, and was not a response to low numbers.

She emphasized that the increase in numbers is "great news," and said the office was delighted so many students are coming to visit.

She noted that when students visit campus, there is a much greater chance they will enroll.

"Who knew Princeton would be so popular this year?" she said.

Because the admission office did not expected such a high turnout, it is already doubling and tripling up pre-frosh with hosts. The office welcomes both underand upperclassmen as hosts.

"For seniors who have just finished their theses," Rapelye said, "this is a wonderful way to give back to the school."

Admissions invited about 900 pre-frosh to the weekend, which includes all admitted students except those who live overseas or were accepted early decision.

Rapelye explained that the increase in visiting pre-frosh may be a response to enhanced admissions efforts to encourage admitted students and their parents to visit. The ability to sign up online for the weekend may have increased response as well.

The '8-ball' campaign seems to have done the trick — by Wednesday, the admission office had found enough hosts for all of the pre-frosh scheduled to attend the weekend, Rapelye said in an email.
