Princeton University is widely known as an eclectic school; each class features students ranging from professional violinists to quantum physicists to fly fishermen. Kate Moore '05 brings another talent to the table as she makes her music video debut in Blinky Blink's upcoming rap video.
Moore is one of 10 featured girls who dance with both Loon and Blink in a movie of Blink's single, "Make Me Wanna Sing." The video is set in a New York City nightclub, to which Moore traveled on Sunday, April 25 for an all-day shooting. Moore said, "I am in the performing scene [of the video], where Blink performs the song, as well as other lounge scenes with just a few girls. Basically I'm out at this lounge with my friends—I just have a more featured and prominent role than the extras."
A former model, Moore was a member of Princeton's track team as a freshman and sophomore. As a result, she said, "Since I've been in school, I haven't really had the time to devote to [modeling]." But this year, since Moore no longer runs, she decided to audition for a role as a dancer in the video.
In the first stage of tryouts, held in January 2004, Moore and other female models met with the directors of the video. The women in the audition were required to introduce themselves and perform a short dance in groups of four.
Callbacks were held in February, during which Moore performed another dance in a group of four, this time for a larger audience of artists, directors and other reviewers. Several weeks later, Moore learned that she had been selected as a featured dancer.
"Make Me Wanna Sing" is Moore's first music video; her prior work has involved mostly photo shoots. However, Moore's face had already appeared on national television before her freshman year of high school: she provided a teenager's perspective on one segment of Oprah Winfrey's Gratitude Journal. Winfrey's camera crew filmed Moore in both her home and high school in Glen Cove, New York. Moore commented, "[Appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show] was a good experience in terms of seeing what it takes to produce a television show."
Moore compared her segment on Winfrey's show to her appearance in Blink's video, stating that as a result of the former, "I'm totally comfortable being on TV, but [the rap video] is something completely different."
Moore's resume, however, extends far beyond the aforementioned roles. An internship at a public relations firm in New York City the past two summers provided her with much inside information on the behind-the-scenes work of the communication industry.
In addition, Moore recently learned that she is one of 30 people selected out of 800 applicants to receive the prestigious International Radio and Television Society (IRTS) Fellowship. The scholarship will allow Moore to work for nine weeks during the coming summer as a paid intern in the entertainment industry. Moore predicts that her job in New York City will involve work with MTV, BET or Disney.
As for the future, Moore has her eyes set on the entertainment industry. "After graduation, I'd like to pursue acting for at least a year," she said. If that job does not suit her, Moore plans to attend law school.
"I just really love all entertainment-type [work]," Moore said.
Clearly, the feeling is mutual.
