M. and women's rugby host Ivy tournament

Both the men's and women's rugby teams will host the 35th annual Ivy League Tournaments this weekend at West Windsor Field.

The women are the defending league champions and will begin their title defense at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning against Cornell. Should the Tigers beat the Big Red, they would advance to the semifinals, which will take place at 1 p.m. later that day.

The women have already qualified for a spot in the National Tournament which will be held in two weeks.

In addition to winning the Ivy title last season, the women also won the East Penn Rugby Union Division I title. Success is nothing new to the Tigers' program as they were the national runners-up in 2000 and finished third nationally the following season. They have won the Ivy title four times in their history.

The men have not enjoyed success similar to that of their female counterparts. They have not won an Ivy League Tournament title in 25 years. They open tournament play at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday when they take on Brown. Should they advance, the men's semifinals will take place later that day beginning at 2 p.m.

The finals for the both the men and the women will be held on Sunday.

"This is a big event for Princeton rugby," men's head coach Tom MacFarlene '88 said.
