Tigers fall to Longhorns, 66-49

DENVER — Early on, at least, everything was going right for the men's basketball team.

Midway through the first half, the No. 14 seeded Tigers led 14-6, to the great dismay of their opponents, No. 3 seeded Texas.

Princeton had slowed the pace of the game to a snail's crawl. Time and again, junior forward Will Venable sliced into the lane, making layups and drawing fouls. Visibly frustrated, the Longhorns missed easy shots and complained to the referees as their head coach, Rick Barnes, looked on in shock.

But the Tigers' success wouldn't last. Texas caught fire from long-range and overwhelmed Princeton in the second half, running away with a 66-49 victory.

First, Longhorns' forward Brian Boddicker got hot, draining three straight open shots from beyond the arc to cut Princeton's halftime lead to 25-22. Then, after the break, the rest of the Texas team followed suit. Guards Brandon Mouton and Kenton Paulino combined to shoot 5-of-5 from downtown over the first nine minutes of the second half, during which time the Longhorns took control of the game with a 24-8 run.

Overall, Texas shot an incredible 11-of-15 from the outside. Mouton led the way, dropping in 23 points including 5-of-6 from three-point range. Venable scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to carry the Tigers.

For Princeton, the strong first half did little to soften the blow of the first-round exit from the NCAA tournament.

"We came here to win and we are disappointed that we weren't able to," a forlorn looking head coach John Thompson '88 said. "This hurts."
