Monday's first town hall meeting with President Tilghman was the right beginning for improving communication and creating a real exchange of ideas between students and administration. The event gave both undergraduates and graduates the opportunity to confront the administration about various issues and receive at minimum, a clarifying response directly afterwards.
However, the small gathering of USG types and activists for the town hall meeting suggest the event's timing and publicity were less than optimal, that most of the student body does not believe the administration will seriously consider its input, or both.
While there will always be time conflicts, holding the meeting Monday afternoon immediately after Spring Break discouraged students from attending. The event was announced just before break and there was very limited time for students.
Student cynicism and apathy also limited attendance at the Monday meeting. If the administration wishes to draw a larger crowd to such events, students will need to see evidence that it seriously considers their input from the whole student body, not just from a select group of students they see on a monthly basis. Focusing primarily on future issues and neglecting to address present matters during the meeting only proved that the administration isn't entirely in tune with the very real concerns most students currently hold.
The soon-to-come Student Selection Network, created through a partnership of USG and Vice President for Camus Life Janet Dickerson should give students more access to committee positions, encouraging more students to become more active in campus decisions.
Holding town hall meetings at least once a semester will give the administration and students a chance to not only improve this communication but also continue their discussions and debates on all topics, ideally reaching some form of conclusion and thorough understanding.
Hopefully, future meetings will be better attended and thus, more attuned to truly addressing the Princeton community's concerns as a whole.
