Regarding 'Let's be honest' (Cullen Newton, March 26):
If it is true that "there is no safer college party environment in the United States than Prospect Avenue," then we have a serious problem.
Newton's latest column is an insult not only to journalistic integrity but to his readers' credulity. First, let's get the obvious falsehood out on the table: From firsthand observation corroborated by other sources, there is hard liquor available on the Street.
Second, I've witnessed all too frequently the alcohol-fueled misogyny that passes as normal on party nights. And the situation inside the clubs is not much better, with freely available pornographic magazines and a culture that crassly objectifies female students. No self-respecting feminist should tolerate this affront to decency.
Third, and most to the point, the sound of the ambulance is commonplace on party nights. Rather than quibbling about where the drinking happens, perhaps the best approach is for the University and the Borough to crack down — hard — on underage drinking wherever it occurs.
Let the administration consider itself warned: Continued unsalutary neglect will result in a student's death from alcohol poisoning. And when that happens, they have no one to blame but themselves. Jonathan C. Eastvold GS
