Jon Stewart, comedian and host of the "The Daily Show," has agreed to speak at this year's Class Day — an annual event organized by the senior class officers which occurs the day before Commencement.
Stewart "rose from the bunch of all the candidates because of his Princeton connection," said Class of 2004 President Eli Goldsmith.
Stewart was raised in nearby Lawrence Township, and his brother is an alumnus of the University. The comedian has also made references to local hangout Hoagie Haven on "The Daily Show."
Stewart was invited to speak at Columbia University, Goldsmith said, but refused because "he really wanted to do Princeton." He noted that Stewart was approached by at least 15 other universities. Goldsmith explained that he hoped to create a class day that reflected the taste of the senior class.
Earlier this year, seniors were invited to make suggestions on the Class of 2004 website and in physical dropboxes around campus. This process yielded roughly 40 suggested names, but Stewart was one of the most popular submissions, Goldsmith said.
The senior class' reaction to Stewart's selection was generally positive.
"I think it's cool to have Jon Stewart," said Brandon Ashe '04. "I don't watch him anymore, but back home I used to pretty regularly."
Katy Hall '04, said she does not currently watch his show but that Stewart's campus visit may prompt her to start.
Andre Kurs '04, said he'd seen "The Daily Show" a few times.
"Stewart's funny, and as good a choice as any other," Kurs said.
Stewart's appearance will only be part of the day's festivities. Each year on Class Day, the University publicly recognizes achievements of the graduating class and faculty. Awards are usually distributed, and the yearbook dedication takes place.
The event typically centers on a featured speaker of notoriety and in the past has included such names as Bill Cosby, Jerry Seinfeld and James Baker '52.

In contrast to many other Ivy League institutions that bring highprofile speakers to give the commencement address, the University tends to use Class Day as its way of featuring famous personalities.
