Professor George's work on amendment is a step back

Regarding 'Professor helps draft amendment' (Feb. 18):

Words cannot express how horrified I am that Prof. Robert George and I share an alma mater. If there is anything more surreal than a brute-force, federal-level attempt to deny marriage to same-sex couples, it is that a Swarthmore graduate is intimately involved.

Fortunately, the proposed constitutional amendment represents a larger enterprise that is doomed to failure. American citizens are more and more firmly rejecting the denial of rights solely on the basis of sexual preference. The recent court decisions that Professor George finds so problematic reflect this very real and inexorable societal change. The judges responsible are doing a better job of representing public opinion than a small group of privileged amendment drafters ever will. Jessica Salvatore GS President, Queer Graduate Caucus
