This page is a bit different from the rest of the paper. That's not just because it's where the 'Prince's pages shed their neutrality. More than any other page in the paper, this page is your page.
Have a problem with what's in the box to the left? Think the stories on the front page today are off the mark? Want us to stop giving the football team such a hard time? Write us a letter. If you think the 'Prince' is missing a big campus issue, send in a column. We'll do our best to get it in the paper. This page is the place to give your view on the paper, the University and the world.
Our regular columnists will continue to challenge you with their views. Professor John Fleming's column appears below and will be here every Monday.
Joining him and the other columnists is a former editor of this page, David Robinson '04. In his remaing half year, he'll balance his thesis-writing with a column that will "push for tangible changes" at the University.
Our columnists are regulars on the page, but the only limits on their work will be accuracy and the sorts of limitations that the FCC puts on TV. Anyone who's watched "The Anna Nicole Smith Show" knows that's a lot of leeway. Orthodoxy is not the goal. Open debate — though may be messy at times — is.
Last year, the 127th Board decided to step back into the fray, reviving the editiorials that gave the 'Prince' view on issues. A newspaper's responsiblity extends beyond reporting the facts. A good newspaper must take those facts, analyze them and give you its view on the issues and what should be done. I don't expect you to agree with us all the time. But I do hope that if you don't agree, reading our view will help you come to a better understanding of why you believe what you do. Any paper that didn't provide that service would be a failure.
The editorial "we" is not some nebulous grammatical convention we'll be hiding behind. I'll be leading a new editorial board to be announced later this week that will be responsible for writing all of our unsigned editorials. This group will be an entirely separate staff from the news-gathering operation, giving it the time and independence to form opinions that won't taint our news coverage. These editorials will be the paper's contribution to campus debate.
Every community needs somewhere to settle its arguments. That's what this page offers Princeton.
It's your university. Make your voice heard. Jonathan Williams can be reached at jlwillia@princeton.edu.
