Vitale '04 wins Sachs award to study theology at Oxford

Vincent Vitale '04 has won the 2004 Daniel Sachs Class of 1960 Graduating Scholarship, enabling him to study for the next two years at Oxford University.

Vitale, an A.B. candidate in philosophy from Point Pleasant, N.J., plans to spend the next two years pursuing an M. Phil in Philosophical Theology at Oxford.

The scholarship was established in 1970 to provide a senior with funds to work, study or travel abroad.

Vitale said he could not be more thrilled about the opportunity to study at Oxford next year. He was also quick to thank those who helped him throughout his college career.

"When I heard that I had received the scholarship, I was intensely thankful," Vitale said.

"So many people are involved: my precious family, my dear friends, Daniel Sachs and those who have carried on his legacy. My receiving this stewardship is the product of so many encouraging words, prayers, criticisms and challenges."

Princeton theology professor Jeffrey Stout recalled the first time he met Vitale and how impressed he was with his work ethic.

"I have known Vince since his senior year of high school, when he joined a local soccer team that Jim Barlow, Princeton men's coach, and I were coaching," Stout said.

"He wasn't the greatest soccer player, but he immediately impressed us with his hard work and his honesty about his weaknesses."

Stout added that Vitale's ability to look at all parts of an argument in the classroom setting helped set him apart from the rest of the scholarship applicants.

"His courage in speaking his mind and the ease and determination with which he responds to criticism are rare for a person his age," Stout said.

"When you tell him what is wrong with an argument he has made, he just takes it in calmly, and comes back with an improved version."

On campus, he also remains involved in a variety of activities.

A four-year varsity soccer player, Vitale is the student director of Athletes in Action Christian Fellowship.

He is also a peer advisor in the philosophy department.

He works as a Big Brother in Princeton's SVC program and has raised funds to support children's initiatives in Kenya and Zambia.

Vitale also received the Pew Younger "Traditio" Scholarship, awarded to Christian scholars.

The Sachs Scholarship is named after Daniel Sachs, who was a former University football and lacrosse star who died at the age of 28.

Sachs studied at Worcester College at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.
