An old 'Prince' editor couldn't have been more correct when he told me that only after 135 issues did he finally feel as though he had hit his stride.
And now, 135 printings after our first a year ago, we, the 127th Managing Board of The Daily Princetonian, only now feel as though we are coming into our own. Per custom, though, we must now step down from our positions and trudge over to our carrells and write our theses.
We were not without fault. We missed a breaking story here or there and allowed more than a few grammatical mistakes to slide through.
But what is important is that we remember those things we did well. We did not back down from stories in fear of losing any popularity contest. All 22 of us editors love this school, but we covered with a fair perspective the wrongs of the University along with its many goods. We gave the paper a stronger voice with our multi-weekly Opinion Board columns that appeared in this gray box. Josh Tauberer brought to life a features section that will continue to evolve into next year.
Physically, we have greatly increased the size of the staff. Also, we are now returning to our permanent home at 48 University Place, which we left last June.
But in doing all this, we have regrettedly passed up on opportunities with our friends, families and studies. But we did so because we love the 'Prince.' We love the ideal of the type of journalistic integrity that serves as a check and balance on the University we observe.
We now leave a new group of editors in charge of accomplishing that ideal. The new Editor-in-Chief, Zach Goldfarb '05, and the rest of the 128th board have laid forth their blueprint to give you another great year's worth of issues.
And as we leave, we'd like to thank you, the reader, for reading with us over the last 12 months and sending along both your praises and criticisms. We would also like to thank our families, friends and professors for forgiving us each time we have prioritized the paper before you. And I personally would like to thank the other editors on this managing board for making this the most rewarding experience I have ever had. — Austin Starkweather '04 127th Editor-in-Chief
