SCORE crash hits early-bird sophomores yesterday

SCORE first became available to sophomores for spring course registration at 7 a.m. yesterday, but many were unable to gain access at that time because of an overloaded web server.

The registar's office received numerous complaints, University registrar Joseph Greenberg said. The problems led many sophomores to worry they would not be able to enroll in their desired classes.

"They had performance problems," Greenberg said. "SCORE was slow allowing them to get in, and some were not able to get in.

"The web server was overloaded, so we had to stop access to it to allow OIT to assess the problem," he added.

Access was stopped for about an hour this morning beginning around 7:45 a.m. Greenberg sent an email to all sophomores at 9:50 a.m. apologizing for the inconvenience and briefly explaining its cause. The email also alerted sophomores that SCORE was available again.

Greenberg and OIT identified the volume of students attempting to log on as the cause of the problem. Sophomores tried to register for their courses in the first hour in much higher numbers than juniors and seniors did, he said.

"The volume was substantially greater than anyone had imagined," Greenberg said.

In order to combat the problem, OIT is planning to double the number of web servers used by next week.

"We went from two to three this afternoon," Greenberg said. "We'll go from three to four Monday."

Sophomore stress

"I got up at 7:45 and tried to log in," Ariel Overstreet '06 said. "When an hour had passed, I refreshed the page, and it said SCORE was not available.

"It was pretty stressful. I was worried about my classes filling up before I registered."

Though Overstreet was able to register for all the classes she wanted, others were not so lucky.

"I wanted to take a music class, but the precept I wanted to take was filled by the time I could get in," Melania Strycharska '06 said. "It was slightly annoying."

"Throughout the entire day, I heard people complaining about SCORE," Strycharska added. "They would say, 'I got up at 7, spent two hours on it and got nothing done.' "
