Matt Margolin '05 won the USG presidential election yesterday, joined in the winner's circle by Shaun Callaghan '06 as vice president.
Both Margolin and Callaghan soundly defeated their opponents, Jacqui Perlman '05 and Frances Schendle '06. Margolin secured 1647 votes over Perlman's 776, and Callaghan received 1,344 votes over Schendle's 974, said senior elections manager William Robinson '04.
Voter turnout was somewhat less this year than last year. There was a 49.9 percent voter turnout, compared to 59 percent last year.
Robinson said that "lower turnout probably tailed off a little in the runoffs because not as many seniors voted as last year."
Robinson also noted that the two presidential runoff candidates this year were in the same eating club — Ivy Club — which "may have lowered the numbers slightly."
"It's pretty exciting," Margolin said last night. "The best part of this campaign was meeting people and hearing their ideas. It was stressful at times, but also a lot of fun."
Margolin attributed his success to his friends, who not only supported him, but helped him get his name out to others who did not know him.
"The first thing I want to do is to look at academic advising, although I also want to address the issues that have fallen by the wayside, like a 24-hour study space and minority relations," Margolin said.
More broadly, Margolin said he wants to "look at how people make decisions and how the University aids these decisions — from which classes to take, to which social options students chose."
Callaghan also expressed him excitement over the election results.
"I have a lot of plans," Callaghan said. "Most immediately, I want to work on social alternatives to the Street and improving the academic advising system."
"Matt will do a fantastic job," Callaghan added, "I look forward to working with him."
Despite her loss, Schendle said she had a great time campaigning. "I think that I initiated a lot of important and necessary dialogue," she said. "It was also a great opportunity to meet new people."
Asked about the new USG officers, Schendle said, "I hope that they will bring students together and create a stronger community."
"I believe that Matt will accomplish a lot and the president and vice president will make an excellent team," Schendle said.
Margolin and Callaghan will assume their offices Feb. 2, when the spring term begins.
