USG suggests changes to career services

Associate Director of Career Services Becky Ross met with the USG Sunday night to discuss possibly revamping the University's career and internship services.

Initiated by USG vice president Jacqui Perlman '05 and U-Councilor Weili Shaw '04, the discussion centered on improving career opportunities for students.

"I'm not saying that Career Services is doing a bad job, but there are some areas that could use improvement," said Shaw, a 'Prince' editor.

Ross asked members of the USG for their thoughts on improving Career Services. Several members voiced opinions about the need for Career Services to get involved earlier in students' academic careers, and to integrate Career Services more fully with the Princeton experience.

"We need to put emphasis on advertising for such events as the career fair and career week," said William Robinson '04, who chairs the Undergraduate Life Committee. "We also need to build better relationships with alumni."

Many students expressed dismay about the limited availability of jobs outside of the financial sector. According to Ross, though investment banks and consulting firms are the first group of employers to come to Princeton to recruit, they do not actually provide the majority of internship opportunities.

"It is difficult, however, to get past the groups who are doing the most on-campus recruiting right now," Ross said.

Ross spoke about the importance of understanding the differences between recruiting and job placement.

"There are several differences in the ways that different companies recruit," she said. "By instituting Tiger Tracks, we place over 7,000 internships on-line and available. However, internship perspective and job perspective are two different things."

The USG will pursue plans to improve Career Services for next year by instituting a Career Day with the Class of 2005 and focusing on the importance of alumni relationships for job searches and internships.

Also during the meeting, the USG approved the takeover of the Princeton Portal website. Earlier in the year the USG had met with the creator of the portal, Matt Stack '04, to discuss taking over the site at the beginning of next year.

One issue was whether the USG could support the Street Life section of the Princeton Portal.

As a University-sponsored entity, the USG is not allowed to advertise the presence of alcohol at an event.

Further, the exclusivity of some eating clubs had concerned many USG members.

In the end, the USG approved the motion to take over the Princeton Portal pending Stack's approval to change one clause regarding the right of merging.

The Projects Board approved funding to groups including Idealistic Nation, TASA, Student Global AIDS Campaign, Pre-Law Society and the Bioengineering Society. Requests from KASA and the Princeton University Gospel Ensemble will be reviewed in coming weeks.
