Record number of shots given on FluFest's first day

More than 2,000 University faculty members, staff, and students had received flu shots for only five dollars by 6:00 p.m. yesterday at the University's annual FluFest, which continues today in Frist Campus Center.

Cosponsored by University Health Services, the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life, Frist Campus Center and Dining Services, the University-subsidized influenza immunization program expanded this year to include the Cirque de Sante — the "ultimate health and wellness celebration" — which showcased fitness demonstrations, student performances, massages, smoothies, healthy snacks and a raffle.

"It was a party! No, wait . . . a fest!" said Jessica George '07, a FluFest attendee.

Thirty-one registered nurses administered vaccines throughout the day. Even though the number of flu shots given exceeded expectations, students did not have to wait on line, said Chief Medical Officer and Executive Director of Health Services Daniel Silverman. Last year, he said, about 3,000 people showed up for the two-day event.

"Our goal this year was to exceed last year's number [of immunizations], especially in light of the possibility of SARS," Silverman said.

To reach this goal, he said, he titled the event 'FluFest,' attempting to turn flu immunization into something "fun and festive."

Though some people may experience side effects such as soreness or redness in the arm, Silverman said, the risk is small.

"No one has fainted yet," he said.

A number of people who have received flu shots in previous years returned, proving that the pain of the shot and its potential side effects are bearable.

"Freshman year, I got really sick around October and November, so from sophomore year on I've been coming," Christine Chang '04 said, after receiving her flu shot. "Even if it doesn't work and I get sick anyway, maybe it would have been worse if I hadn't gotten it."

Numerous University staff members seem to be thinking the same, as Vice President of Human Resources Maureen Nash and Deans David Dobkin and Nancy Malkiel were among those given the vaccine yesterday.

"Many illustrious people have put out their arms," confirmed Silverman.
