Racist fliers distributed by the white supremacist group The National Alliance were found along Princeton Borough's Jefferson Road last weekend, Borough Police Lt. Dennis McManimon said.
The National Alliance's new ad campaign targets African-Americans. The racially-charged messages read, "Don't Have Sex With Blacks . . . Avoid AIDS," and "Don't Be the Next Victim."
McManimon said members of The National Alliance attached the fliers to plastic bags filled with sand and then proceeded to throw the bags from their car windows onto the curbs along Jefferson Road.
Though these fliers may represent a dissemination of racism, Borough Police Capt. Anthony Federico told the Times of Trenton, they do not constitute a crime and are permissible under the First Amendment's guarantee to freedom of speech.
For now, McManimon said police are investigating the incident as a littering crime. They have received no complaints of a hate or bias crime.
Borough Councilman David Goldfarb said the fliers should not be seen as a threat or reason for concern.
"I don't think people should see it as a physical threat," he said. "These are a marginal group of crackpots. There's nothing to be alarmed about."
McManimon said he believes the fliers were not found near or on campus because The National Alliance does not focus on young college students as its audience.
"This is a group of white, middle-aged, upper-class people who want to target other older, upper-class people," McManimon said.
In addition, the University's physical layout is not conducive to the Alliance's method of distributing their fliers, McManimon said, as members of The National Alliance would have difficulty driving around campus and throwing plastic bags holding sand out of its car windows.
The discovery of the fliers comes on the heels of a June incident in which propaganda bearing anti-Semitic messages were found off of Stockton Street.
Those fliers — which were also identified as National Alliance material — numbered over 100, McManimon said.
There are no known chapters of The National Alliance in the Borough, McManimon said, but the Northern New Jersey Unit of The National Alliance has its headquarters in nearby Passaic County.
The Associated Press reported that the incidents are not unique to the Princeton area. Fliers proclaiming similar messages have been found across the country in recent months.
For now, the notorious "Don't Have Sex With Blacks" flier is available on The National Alliance website. And Princeton Borough authorities are using the site in their investigation.
