Pre-Law Society to prepare students for careers in law

Aspiring lawyers on campus will have a new resource this year.

The Pre-Law Society was founded by Derrick Raphael '06 during the summer as a way to help future law students learn more about what attorneys do and provide them with opportunities in law.

"The main goal is letting people know what's exactly behind law school and what's exactly behind law," he said. "A lot of people think 'I want to do this law and I want to do that law' but we want to let them know what it actually entails."

The organization is still in its early stages. It does not yet have a charter or funding from the University. And the society's only activity so far has been a dinner conversation on international policy last Friday.

But the society is already attracting significant attention.

More than 180 students signed up at the student activities fair, and the group is planning several upcoming trips to local courtrooms, LSAT preparation classes and sponsored internships at law firms.

A law school tour is planned for fall break. Students will remain in Princeton and take day trips to New York City and Philadelphia.

Raphael wants to use Princeton's alumni connections and hopes to set up each student with a lawyer who is a Princeton alumnus and have them correspond often via email.

"If you're interested in corporate law, we can set you up with a corporate lawyer in the area, and maybe they can meet face to face at some point," Raphael said. "Hopefully, this will open doors for internships and other things also."

Ties to other University programs are still being established. There are no faculty members affiliated with the club.

The unofficial adviser is Kevin Cunningham, a politics preceptor last year and Mathey College fellow.

"Right now we're pretty much shooting out of the blocks, and everything's going really well. We'll hopefully have something in the mid-October timeframe," Raphael said.

"Instead of being ambitious, and biting off more than we can chew, let's do something that we can do. Let's start small and make sure it goes well, and then from that point get more ambitious next year."
