Letters to the editor

Israeli, Palestinian comparison is wrong

Regarding 'Letters to the editor' (Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003):

Elliot Ratzman gives the impression that, somehow, Israeli wrongs are commensurate to Palestinian wrongs. In reality, however, nothing could be further from the truth.

"Can we count the number of Palestinians killed by vigilante Israeli settlers in the last few years?" Yes, we can. And the number of Israelis killed by Palestinians would be a 100 times greater. "Shall we mention the number of Palestinian homes bulldozed in blatant land-grabs?" What land-grabs? Israel doesn't occupy houses it bulldozes; this is obvious, since the houses are often directly in the middle of Palestinian camps—and the only reason they were bulldozed in the first place is that terrorists used them as shooting posts. What of the "slow-motion ethnic cleansing Israel is conducting in the occupied territories"? This is truly absurd. All Israelis know that the Palestinians far outbreed them, so apart from being wholly repugnant, "slow-motion ethnic cleansing" would accomplish nothing. Israelis accept that they must live next to the Palestinians in peace.

All of Ratzman's accusations are blatantly and frighteningly disingenuous. Obviously, Israelis are not perfect. But only the most insidious designs will ever attempt a moral comparison between Israeli and Palestinian wrongs. Andrew Moroz GS
