Use of quote marks not intended to deny campus group legitimacy
Regarding 'Students lobby for Indigenous Peoples day' (Oct. 13, 2003):
I want to comment on the accusation that, in the minds of some students, "Ramos-Mrosovsky placed 'Native Americans at Princeton' in quotes — to them, a form of delegitimization."
All I meant to do was indicate that Native Americans at Princeton was a student group, rather than an ad hoc collection of students who happened to be of native American ancestry. If Ms. Arotsky, the writer of the article in question, had asked me, I would have been happy to say so.
This student group's reaction amply illustrates the kind of get-offended-and-ask-questions-later style typical of identity politics on campus. Carlos Ramos-Mrosovsky '04 [Many writers put quotations around group names, but the Daily Princetonian's style standard is to print these names without quotes. The quote marks in Ramos-Mrosovsky's column were a copy-editing error, and we regret any confusion they may have caused. - Editorials & Opinions Editors]
Apply 14th Amendment equally to all constitutional questions
Regarding 'In the fight for gay rights, students should show outrage' (Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003):
After reading Katherine Reilly's editorial on gay marriage I was left wondering the following: What are Ms. Reilly's views on the equal protection clause's applicability to state supported affirmative action? I suspect that her strict interpretation of the 14th Amendment in the case of homosexual marriage has more to do with her views on social policy than her concern for upholding the "spirit" of the Constitution. Israel supporters must be responsible for fanatics on their side as well
Regarding Matthew Schonfield's 'Personal observation where terror's flags fly' (Tuesday, October 7, 2003):
Though the world would be better without ethnic-religious terrorists like Hezbollah, we could also hope for the disappearance of the ethnic-religious terrorists being harbored in the Jewish settlements. Can we count the number of Palestinians killed by vigilante Israeli settlers in the last few years? Shall we mention the number of Palestinian homes bulldozed in blatant land-grabs? Any account of the inappropriate terror tactics against Israel cannot be complete without factoring in the slow-motion ethnic cleansing Israel is conducting in the occupied territories. Shall we stand against terror? Certainly. But we who support Israel need to take responsibility for the fanatics in our own house as well. Elliot Ratzman GS
