Career Services works to offer job variety

Regarding 'Seniors in Suits' (Oct. 9, 2003):

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a career counselor at Princeton is the opportunity to talk to, work with and advise students with such a diverse array of talents, experiences and interests. In the three years that I have been with Career Services, I have had conversations with students aspiring to be opera singers and artists, accountants and bankers, scientists and researchers, Foreign Service Officers and elected officials, and so on. There are indeed a range of mainstream and niche career options awaiting all students, and one of our primary goals in this office is to provide students with strategies, resources and contacts to facilitate exploration of these fields. One of the more challenging aspects of being a career counselor at Princeton is the perception among many students that only certain fields or options are available to them right after graduation.

A major part of our efforts to expose students to a range of career options and connect students with alumni who can provide valuable advice comes in the form of our biannual Career Week. Over 75 alumni have come back to campus in the past several years to participate in these panel discussions about the opportunities and options that await you in your post-Princeton lives. This semester's Career Week, Nov. 10 through 14, will feature alumni speaking about careers in social change, sports, arts and museums, writing, foreign languages and sciences. We will also be sponsoring, with a variety of Princeton-affiliated service organizations on campus, our first annual Summer Service Internship Fair in the Frist Campus Center on Nov. 14.

As a resource for the "undecided" as well as the "very focused," Career Services is committed to supporting the students of Princeton University in their efforts to identify those options that will be most rewarding and satisfying. As counselors, our staff has always been concerned with each student's inner answer to the question, "What is right for me?" Whether you are a first-year student or a senior, we invite all students to work with us to help make your choices a reality. — Becky Ross, Associate Director & Director of Counseling and Programming, Career Services
